Thelana is born in the river valleys of Ilmarinen, the middle child in a family of twelve. Her eldest brother, Borz, is sold into slavery when she is very young. As a child, soldiers from Kratos use her home as a refuge. Their Captain, Aola, teaches her to master the bow. As the dark hemisphere continues to creep eastward, turning crops to waste, famine forces her to wandering the woods, to hunt for survival while hiding from cannibalistic half-men. After proving her archery skills at a Kratan military camp, Captain Dantes overlooks her "feral" ways and teaches her to wear clothing, before recruiting her into his army. On the Plains of Narth, Dantes' forces are decimated by bogrens and horg, and Thelana flees the battlefield. Torn with longing for the life she knew, she returns to Ilmarinen to find it abandoned, the crops and ilm flowers withered, with no trace of her family's whereabouts. Thelana then makes her way to the coastal cities, where she meets Kin Sonomila, who introduces her to the life of a thief. When he tries to violate her, Thelana steals his mechanical bow-sword and leaves him to die in an alley. Fleeing to Hedonia, Thelana dwells in the slums with the outcasts, the crippled, and the prostitutes, before climbing the pyramidal Temple of Sargonus in a vain attempt to rob it. As she pries the giant pearl eye from the idol of the Sea God, she encounters the first Ilmar since leaving home. Thelana is quickly apprehended, however, and she is thrown into a pit beneath the city. There she waits, praying to the Goddess of Nature for the man she has just met, for Xandr, to rescue her.

Far from the leering eyes of civilization, Thelana does not wear clothing of any kind, as is common among her people. She will fight and hunt naked when possible, trusting in her natural agility and a heightened, spiritual connection to her surroundings; for the Ilmar say, Nature is my armor. Ilmar have tougher skin than most humans, especially in the soles of their feet, which is more like shoe leather. Other Ilmarin attributes include olive to bronze skin, light color hair, and very light, almost translucent eyes. Ilmarin women typically wear their hair in a single long braid and, despite knowing nothing of clothing, are not without a sense of individuality, evidenced by the elaborate henna patterns they use to adorn themselves. Thelana's sole possessions are her quiver of hand-made obsidian tipped arrows and a gold and jade bow which doubles as a bastard sword.

About the picture: My inspiration for Thelana comes from a number of places, but primarily from my own experiences as a nudist. Thelana embodies everything I love about nudism, nature, Greek myth, and fantasy. Along with her male counterpart, Xandr, she is, to my knowledge, the first true naturist hero. It's taken me many years to find the perfect image of Thelana, and I think this is it. Getting the picture out of my head and onto paper has been no easy challenge. She needed to be beautiful, natural, graceful (notice how precariously, yet confidently she clings to the trees) and most importantly, she needed to be naked but in a nonsexual way. I essentially hoped to capture the same qualities that can be found in Classical art---nobody can arguably find Praxiteles' "Hermes" or Leonardo's "David" offensive, so I hope no one will be able to find "Thelana" by Lipatov offensive. And I must say, my hat goes off to Mr. Alexey Lipatov from the Ukraine for this superb portrayal. You've helped me give birth to Thelana and you did it with ease (this was his first and only draft).

This is a wonderful drawing; the muscle structure and skin tone is spot on.
And it's very nice, as well, to see a barefoot woman. A lot of times they are
put into these god awful high heels, which I cannot stand nor tolerate.

Anyway, it's a lovely complimentary piece to what appears to be an
interesting book series.

Yes, I agree. So much of deviantArt is populated by unrealistic nudes, that appear to exist for no other reason but to stimulate male fantasies. I hate it when I see a female character in full plate, with big armored shoulder pads and boots, and yet their boobs and genitals go completely unprotected. In what universe does this make sense? For me, Thelana has to be plausible to be interesting. Clothing is terribly uncomfortable for her and her people, but she'd definitely find high-heels more cumbersome than a loincloth!

That's good to hear, her opinion on high heels, that is. ;)
Though I actually kind of like the partial armoring with the
breasts and genitals exposed, it's wonderfully absurd. But
yes, displaying a woman's sexuality without showing any
substance is unappealing - there's more to a woman than
her sexuality, no matter how important the sex is for visual

Artwork, and I do mean work, cannot be a second thought.
I, for example, try my very best; yet still, my drawings tend
to be cartoony. No room for laziness, either way.

Sure, sometimes going the absurd route can be fun, and I am not knocking any particular style. It's the same with literature. Some works of fiction aren't meant to be taken too literally or seriously.

Not to be taken too literally or seriously is my forte. ;)
Half the fun is just making shit up. Pardon my French.

Thank you for the good story and the gorgeous and powerfully sexy artwork

> Ilmar have tougher skin than most humans, especially in the soles of their feet, which is more like shoe leather.

If she is Earth agent working undercover, all she needs is skin-tight full-body suit made of thin transparent nano-material. No troubles with elaborate local fashion, how neat.

Thelana lives on Aenya, another planet very different from ours, but the climate is largely the same. Her homeland of Ilmarinen is ideal for human habitation, never becoming too hot or too cold. You could describe it as a kind of paradise. Regardless, the Ilmar are much more accustomed to living ruggedly. Their PSR would be off the charts!

Beautiful piece, interesting world you are creating!

I appreciate the comment! The world is far more important to me than the art since I only have these pieces commissioned for the novel my world is based on. I've been working on Aenya for the past 14 years. No quick self-publishing here. I hope to have "Ages of Aenya" on bookstores shelves soon. Be sure to check out my blog where you can read more about Aenya, including sample chapters of the first book.

This is a fantastic picture.

The artwork is magnificent, but almost overshadowed by your brilliant explanation of your intent for this piece, and indeed the characters of Xandr and Thelana in general.

Beautifully done!
If only I could come close to that level of art.

Looks like something by Boris. . . which is a good thing. I would not want to mess with her.
AGEOFAENYA Featured By Owner Jun 6, 2012  Professional Writer
Thanks for the feedback! And yes, Boris was an inspiration, as was Frazetta. But I am just the author. Be sure to check out Alexey Lipatov's home page too.

The human body was never designed, nor meant to be offensive. Only corrupt governments and religions outlaw the human body. Which is sad.

Could not agree more.

I think you more-or-less managed to hit the spot. My one thing is that her breasts are kinda pointy. Other than that, she honestly looks like a classical figure. Well-done.
AGEOFAENYA Featured By Owner May 3, 2012  Professional Writer
I agree about her breasts. But, hey, I didn't actually draw this, just had it commissioned. Be sure to head on over to Alexey's page to give him credit: [link]
